Lion Cub - Kindergarten

The Lion Cub Scouts is a pilot program for boys in Kindergarten and their adult partners. This program combines exciting indoor and outdoor activities designed for kindergarten boys and their adult partner. Adults are there as a support and guide, and allow the new Cub Scout to discover the activities and consequences under adult supervision. He will learn by doing these things himself. And as he learns and grows the relationship with him will grow as well.

The goals of the Lion Cubs program
  • To strengthen Scouting’s position in the community
  • To reflect the diversity of our communities
  • To offer greater support for children and their families
  • To introduce children and their families to the fun of the outdoors
  • To provide extended learning opportunities outside of school
Lion Cub Family benefits
  • Offers age-appropriate activities each month
  • Provides value for families
  • Enhances quality family time
  • Provides a forum for adult interaction
  • Encourages positive interaction between Scouts
  • Strengthens parenting skills
  • Introduces families to Scouting Goals of the Lion Cubs Program

Tiger Cub - 1st Grade

Tiger Cub is the first step of Cub Scouting and is for boys in the first grade.  The Tiger Cub motto is "Search, Discover, Share," and Tiger Cubs get to do all of those things: search out new activities, discover new things, and share them with others.

The first thing that Tigers (and all boys entering Cub Scouts) need to do is earn their Bobcat Badge.  Among other things, that means learning the Cub Scout Promise and the Law of the Pack, so be sure to practice those at home and at every den meeting.

Next, the Scouts will work on their Tiger Cub rank.  They work on five achievements:

  • Making My Family Special;
  • Where I Live;
  • Keeping Myself Healthy and Safe;
  • How I Tell It; and,
  • Let's Go Outdoors.

Each of these achievements includes one family activity, one den activity and one "go see it" outing.  After the Tigers complete their five achievements, they receive their Tiger Rank and can work on electives for the rest of the school year.

Wolf Cub - 2nd Grade

Wolf Cub is the second step of Cub Scouting and is for boys in second grade.  Cub Scouting means doing, and everything in Cub Scouting is designed to keep the boys on the go.  Activities are used to achieve the aims of Scouting: citizenship training, character development, and physical fitness.

Those who were Tigers in first grade have already earned their Bobcat badge.  Any new Wolves that join will first need to earn their Bobcat badge.

Once a Cub Scout has earned the Bobcat badge, he starts earning his Wolf rank.  To earn the Wolf badge, a boy must pass 12 Achievements involving simple physical and mental skills in the following areas:

  1. Feats of Skill
  2. Your Flag
  3. Keep Your Body Healthy
  4. Know Your Home and Community
  5. Tools for Fixing and Building
  6. Start a Collection
  7. Your Living World
  8. Cooking and Eating
  9. Be Safe at Home and on the Street
  10. Family Fun
  11. Duty to God
  12. Making Choices

After completing these Achievements, the Scout earns their Wolf badge.  After earning the Wolf badge, Wolves can work on elective requirements for the rest of the school year to earn Arrow Points.

Bear Cub - 3rd Grade

Bear Cub is the third step of Cub Scouting and is for boys in third grade.  Those who join the bear den without having been a Wolf Cub Scout must first earn the Bobcat badge.  All Scouts in the Bear den work their way along the Bear trail to earn their Bear rank.

For these older Cub Scouts, the activities for advancement and achievement are more challenging.  The Bear Handbook has 24 Bear achievements, 12 of which a boy must complete to earn his Bear badge.  The achievements are grouped into four major areas:

  • God (must complete one of two achievements)
  • County (must complete three of five achievements)
  • Family (must complete four of six achievements)
  • Self  (must complete four of eleven achievements)
Many of the achievements are completed in den meetings, however, several must be completed at home with the scout's family.  After successfully completing twelve achievements, the Bear badge is awarded.  After earning the Bear badge, scouts can work on electives to earn Arrow Points.

Webelos I - 4th Grade

Webelos I is the first part of an 18 month transition program from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts for boys in the 4th grade. The word Webelos is an acronym for "We'll Be Loyal Scouts" and is both the singular and the plural form.

The boy becomes a Webelos Scout upon graduation from the Bear program in the summer following third grade.  Boys new to Cub Scouting can become Webelos if they have completed the third grade and have earned their Bobcat badge.

Webelos may wear either the blue Cub Scout uniform or the tan Boy Scout uniform, with Cub Scout insignia.  Boys who are continuing from lower ranks typically continue to use their blue uniform until they have earned their Webelos rank, at which point many families opt to switch to the tan uniform.  Boys who are just joining Cub Scouts at the Webelos level will probably want to purchase only the tan uniform.

Instead of working on electives, each Webelos Scout works to complete a series of 20 hobby and career Activity Badges (pins).  The emphasis shifts from home-centered activities to a series of group centered activities conducted by the Webelos den.

The Activity Badges are patterned after merit badges in Boy Scouts.  They are worn on a set of ribbons called Webelos Colors.

The Webelos program has two major milestones: the Webelos rank badge which is typically earned in the spring of the fourth grade year and the Arrow of Light award which is earned in the spring of fifth grade.  The Arrow of Light is the highest rank and badge that a Cub Scout can earn.  It is the only Cub Scout rank that carries over to Boy Scouts is worn on the Boy Scout uniform.

Webelos II - 5th Grade

Webelos II is the continuation of an 18 month transition program from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts for boys in the 5th grade.

During these two years, the Webelos Scouts can earn two badges of rank and 20 Activity Badges (pins).  The two ranks are the Webelos badge and the Arrow of Light award.  Usually the boys earn the Webelos badge during the first year and the Arrow of Light during the second year.  It is possible for a boy who joins Scouting at the start of fifth grade to earn both his Webelos badge and his Arrow of Light award before it is time to graduate into a Boy Scout troop, however, it takes a lot of planning and effort to accomplish this.
